THE DAYS OF THIS SOCIETY ARE NUMBERED, a group show opening sunday march 6

I am in a group show at the Abrons Art Center (on the lower east side). The opening is this Sunday, March 6, from 6-8 pm. See infos below:

Inspired by a famous statement by French thinker Guy Debord, proclaiming that THE DAYS OF THIS SOCIETY ARE NUMBERED, this exhibition plays with the notion that at the beginning of the XXI century one is experiencing a period of fin de siècle, in which the state of affairs is questioned and a collective anxiety is emerging, a situation caused by the feeling of political, economic, and cultural crisis that is permeating the Western world and is creating a social entropy. Featured Artists: caraballo-farman (Argentina-Iran/Canada), Carolina Caycedo (Colombia), Hugo Canoilas (Portugal), Ruth Ewan (UK), John Hawke (US), Kiluanji Kia Henda (Angola), Nadja Marcin (Germany), Takashi Horisaki (Japan), Brooke Singer (US), Dread Scott (US). Curated by Miguel Amado, the AIRspace curator-in-residence. On view from March 6-April 16. Opening reception Sunday, March 6, from 6-8 p.m. Click here for more information.

Data Viz Challenge Web Site

About: Every year, Americans fill out income tax forms and make a payment to the IRS. It’s an important civic duty, but it is also a lot of money. Where does it all go? Using data provided by WhatWePayFor.com, we challenge you to create a data visualization that will make it easier for U.S. citizens to understand how the government spends our tax money.

TCK Pop-tarts

Jenna is cooking pop-tarts! I am so excited to taste them _tomorrow_. This recipe was inspired by the pesticides, petroleum and a lot of ??? in Kellog’s Strawberry Pop-Tarts®. Deconstruction by Hunter high, redesigned by TCK and next eating by you (if you visit our kitchen tomorrow at 1pm). More info about TCK pop-tarts, with video-assisted cooking techniques, on our new website thecounterkitchen.org. When? Soon.

Back Shooting at Hunter’s Point, San Francisco

While in San Francisco over the holidays, I was able to get back to Hunter’s Point and shoot some more. The Navy granted me access to most of the Superfund site, except portions that have yet to undergo remediation or are too dilapidated. I noticed a considerable amount of change since I was there last July. The cleanup seems to be moving fast, which makes me think that construction of a new 49ers football stadium might be in the not so distant future. Here are some keel blocks that were once used at the dry docks (shot with my iphone). My 4×5 negatives are still at the lab…

We Will Be Cooking in The Counter Kitchen Again

Stefani Bardin and I launched The Counter Kitchen at Eyebeam in Dec 2010. We started with a day-long workshop with NYC high school students from Hunter Math & Science. They brought their favorite food and home products (such as Strawberry Pop-tarts, Diet Coke, Johnson’s Baby Lotion and Axe Shampoo) for us to reverse engineer together. We got to work mapping out the ingredients — learning where they come from and what they do. Then the students re-labeled their products based on research. Pesticides in your Pop-tarts anyone? 10% petroleum filling and 90% question mark!? Where’s the berry? Fun stuff!! Oh, and we made some gatorade and toothpaste from scratch too. They both got “thumbs up” from our super tasters (the students).

In Dec 2010 we also opened the kitchen to the public for Eyebeam’s Holiday Mixer, making breath mints (image above) from xylitol and pomegranate juice. Also on the burner were DIY gummi bears and more gatorade and toothpaste.

Next up: we are going to polish up those re-labels to share with you and start experimenting with new recipes (some baby lotion and diet coke perhaps…). We are also lining up some guests to join us in TCK so we can do more and do it better.

This is it.
